Team GB 1-0 Uruguay:
Sturridge sends hosts
through as group
winners to set up South
Korea tie
Stuart Pearce's men progress as
Group A winners after a
relatively comfortable victory
over the South Americans who
have been poor throughout the
competition.
Team GB have
progressed to the
knockout phase
of the Olympics as
Group A winners
after a fairly
comfortable 1-0
win over the
disappointing Uruguay.
Stuart Pearce's men controlled
much of the match before some
late pressure from the South
Americans, and although there
weren't many clear-cut chances in
the first period, GB went into the
break in the lead as Daniel
Sturridge netted in stoppage time.
In a similar fashion to the first
period, chances hardly flowed
after half-time, but Sturridge
almost got a second late on as he
forced Martin Campana in the
Uruguay goal to tip his effort
round the post, while Gaston
Ramirez came close with a
stinging drive that crashed off the
bar in injury time.
Pearce made three changes to the
team that beat UAE 3-1 with James
Tomkins, Ryan Giggs and Marvin
Sordell dropping to the bench in
favour of Ryan Bertrand, Scott
Sinclair and Daniel Sturridge.
Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez also
made a number of changes, as
Matias Aguirregaray, Diego
Rodriguez and former AC Milan
youngster Tabare Viudez replaced
Emiliano Arias, Nicolas Lodeiro and
Maxi Calzado, respectively.
The hosts started in positive
fashion with Craig Bellamy getting
plenty of involvement from the off,
as the Welshman crossed in from
the right, but Scott Sinclair's back-
post header was blocked at the
critical stage.
GB continued to press the
Uruguayans and some good work
by Aaron Ramsey down the left
won a corner, from which Alexis
Rolin was forced to clear just in
front of the goal line after Steven
Caulker beat Sebastian Coates in
the air.
However, moments later Coates
did triumph in the air and came
close to giving his side the lead as
the Liverpool man nodded Luis
Suarez's left-wing free-kick over
the bar, but he should have at
least hit the target.
Bellamy and Ramsey were having
an impressive first-half and they
linked up excellently down the
right as the forward played a
disguised pass inside to the
Arsenal man who fizzed a smart
ball across the penalty area, but it
sailed through without anyone
getting contact on it.
Coates was soon causing aerial
problems once again for GB,
connecting with Diego
Rodriguez's corner, heading it
downwards towards goal before
it bounced up and struck Joe Allen,
leading to intense calls for a
penalty, however replays showed
the ball quite clearly hit the
Swansea man in the chest.
After imposing a significant
amount of control over Uruguay,
GB finally took the lead in first-half
added time, and it was brilliantly
worked.
Scott Sinclair cut inside before
slipping an inch-perfect pass in
behind the defence for Allen. The
Wales international cut the ball
back and found Sturridge amidst a
crowd of players in the area, but
the Chelsea man was able to poke
the ball into an open goal,
allowing Stuart Pearce's side to go
into the break in the lead.

No Medals Yet for Nigeria.- Team Nigeria kicks off to a Poor Start but Remains Hopeful

days at the London 2012
Olympics and has earned no

In Table Tennis, the entire group
of male and female players have
crashed out.
Segun Toriola and Quadri Aruna
representing the men, and

lost 4-1 to Swedish Persson
Jorgen in his second outing.
Oshoniake also won her
preliminary round match, before

the day while Edem lost 4-2 to
Egypt’s Dina Meshref.
Jonathan Akinyemi, Nigeria’s
first ever Olympic Games

having missed a place among the

next round.
In Boxing, Nigeria’s Muideen
Akanji failed to make it to the last
16 of the men’s boxing

defeat at the hands of Ireland’s
captain, Darren O’Neil, on
Saturday.
And on Monday, Team Nigeria
had another poor performance
when one of their boxers,
Lukmon Lawal lost his round of
16 Light Heavyweight bout 19-7
points to Ihab Almatbouli of
Jordan, crashing out of the
Games.
However, the Nigerian Basketball
team, D’Tigers managed to
defeat Tunisia 60-56 points in
the men’s basketball opening
match which brought some
consolation to Nigeria. But sadly,
they lost their second
match against Lithuania
yesterday.
Meanwhile, South Africa has
secured Africa’s first gold medal
at the London 2012 Olympics.
Cameron van der Burgh, on
Sunday, secured the gold medal
in the men’s 100m breaststroke.
Despite the seemingly dull start,
we are proud of our Nigerian
athletes who have put in so
much time, resources and
training to compete at the
games. We acknowledge the
athletes who put in their
personal financial resources to
ensure that they get the
necessary training;
we acknowledge their zeal and
passion for the game and we say
we are proud of them.
Like the proverbial saying “All
hope is not lost”, Nigeria still has
more chances to bring victory to
Nigeria in the remaining games.

SUICIDAL! Pregnenant woman swallows 51 wraps of cocaine
THERE couldn’t have been a
much more suitable adjective
to describe the action of a
middle-aged woman who
threw caution to the winds
and swallowed an
astonishing 51 wraps of
cocaine for inexcusable
reason of poverty than to
describe it as ‘suicide’.
The 38 year-old woman from
Oduma in Enugu State who
resides in Brazil gave her
name as Mbechi Obiageli
Susan. She was arrested at
the Nnamdi Azikiwe
International Airport, Abuja,
on her way from Sao Paulo,
Brazil, by operatives of the
National Drug Law
Enforcement Agency, NDLEA,
with the aid of a scanning
machine.
Though the woman has
since pleaded poverty for her
action, chairman of the anti-
narcotic agency, Ahmadu
Giade, was quick to disagree
with her claim on the ground
that there were several other
credible means of earning a
living.
Illicit drug trafficking
Giade said: “Poverty is far
from an excuse for anybody
to take to illicit drug
trafficking. There are many
other ways of making a
living without breaching the
law. Apart from offending
the law, did she think about
the danger inherent in
ingesting hard drugs as a
pregnant woman? This is
why we shall continue to do
our best to provide enabling
environment to fight this
menace that is fast assuming
frightening dimension.”
While the case of Susan was
still being analysed, two
other women, Ms. Obiakor
Maryann Okwudili and Ms.
Anene Blessing Iruoma
allegedly walked into the
agency’s dragnet also at the
same airport with a much
more larger quantity of hard
drugs which later tested for
Methamphetamine smartly
concealed in their
customized panties,
brassiers and hair wigs.
Though the women tried to
outwit NDLEA operatives,
they were, however,
betrayed by their body frisk;
and that attracted the
attention of airport security
officials who suspected that
there must be more to their
gorgeous looks. Upon
profiling too, the duo who
hail from Nando and
Igbariam in Anambra State
respectively were discovered
to have concealed the illicit
drugs in their underwears
and hair wigs.
They were both on their way
to Malaysia via Cairo and
attempted to board an Egypt
airline flight. They too
blamed poverty for their
woes. The drugs weighed
4.5kgs.
Commenting on the arrest,
Abuja airport commander of
NDLEA, Mr. Hamisu Lawan,
said he was shocked at the
escalating rate of women’s
involvement in criminality
especially illicit drug
trafficking. Though he
commended his men for
their exceptional
performance, he also
expressed gratitude to
airport security officials for
their alertness and
collaboration.
Hamisu said: “The drugs
were detected during
routine screening of
passengers. The suspects are
helping narcotic officials in
our investigation. I commend
the level of cooperation
among security agencies at
the airport. I also thank the
management of the Federal
Airport Authority of Nigeria,
FAAN, for their significant
role in these arrests.
“Miss Anene Blessing hails
from Igbariam in Anambra
State with passport number
A03660604. She was found
to be wearing a customized
brassier, pants and hair wig
all stuffed with substances
which tested positive for
methamphetamine weighing
1.7kg. Ms Obiakor Maryann
Okwudili, age 34, who hails
from Nando in Anambra
State with passport number
A01444553 was
apprehended on same flight
with Anene.
She too concealed 1.90kg of
methamphetamine in under
wears. The third suspect
named Mbechi Obiageli
Susan, with passport number
A00288396 hails from
Oduma village in Enugu State.
She ingested 900 grammes
of cocaine and was arrested
on her way from Sao-Paulo,
Brazil with the aid of
scanning machines. Mbechi
claimed to be three months
pregnant and during the
process of profiling, she
excreted 51 pellets of
cocaine weighing 900
grammes.
