29 killed, 16 injured as buses collide, burst into flames

Two buses
collided head-on and
burst into flames in
northern Nigeria’s
Yobe state on Friday,
killing at least 29
people, police said.
“Two Toyota Hiace
Buses… travelling in
opposite directions on
the Potiskum-Kano
Road had a head-on
collision and thereafter
went off in flames.
Twenty nine persons
— eleven of them
burnt beyond
recognition — have so
far been confirmed
dead,” national police
spokesman Frank Mba
said in a statement,
adding that 16 people
were also injured.
Police said the accident
happened at 1:00 pm
(1200 GMT) in the
state’s Nengere area
and the injured were
taken to a hospital in
the neaby city of
Potiskum.
The statement
lamented the
“incessant cases of
accidents” on Nigeria’s
highways, considered
some of the most
dangerous in the
world.
The Federal Road
Safety Commission
(FRSC) Sector
Commander, Malam
Shehu Umar,
confirmed that the two
buses travelling on the
opposite direction had
a head on collusion
about 10 km from
Potiskum and killed
the passengers on
board.
“The buses went up in
fire as they collided,
killing the 29 victims
with nine burnt
beyond recognition,’’
he said.
Umar attributed the
accident to reckless
driving and over-
speeding, adding:
“accidents on this road
are mostly associated
with reckless driving
and over-speeding.’’
More than 17,000
people died in about
31,000 road accidents
across the country,
between 2007 and
2009, according to the
federal road safety
agency’s 2010 report,
the most recent
published.

Unbelievable: Man, 25,allegedly hacked uncle to death

EBONYI State Police
Command, Friday, said
it arrested one Ifeanyi
Okorie, 25, who hailed
from Amatakwu,
Ugwulangwu in
Ohaozara Local
Government Area of
Ebonyi state for
allegedly killing his
uncle with a machete.
According to the
Command, the suspect
had on Thursday after
waking up from sleep,
grabbed a cutlass and
hacked to death his 65
years old uncle, Uwajie
Obasi and that during
interrogation, the
suspect confessed to
have committed the
crime.
Confirming the arrest
of the suspect, the
State Police Public
Relations Officer, DSP
Sylvester Igbo stated
that “A case of murder
was reported at
Ohaozara Police Station
on 30th 2015 at about
1900hrs.
It was alleged that one
Ifeanyi Okorie aged 25
yrs of Amatakwu
Ugwulangwu killed his
uncle one Uwajie Obasi,
65 yrs old of the same
address. The suspect
has been arrested and
he has made useful
statement.”
DSP Igbo revealed that
during interrogation,
the suspect noted that
the reason he killed his
uncle was because he
had a dream where he
saw his uncle chasing
him with a machete
with the intention of
killing him and that
when he woke up, he
grabbed a cutlass and
killed his uncle to
forestall such incident
from happening to
him.
“When he was asked
why he killed his uncle,
he said that he had a
dream and saw his
uncle chasing him with
a machete trying to kill
him, so when he woke
up he took a machete
and killed his uncle
before he could
actualise his dream.”
The suspect according
to the PPRO will soon
be charged to court
after the police must
have concluded
investigation into the
matter.
Meanwhile, the body of
the deceased, Uwajie
Obasi had already been
deposited at the
Okposi General Hospital
Mortuary, Ohaozara
where autopsy on the
body is expected to be
carried out.

K Solo, wife re-unite, deny feud

If you think music
producer, K-Solo and
wife, Kikelomo are still
on the war path and
are living separately,
you may be in for a
shocker.
The couple has since
buried the hatchet and
they are living as
husband and wife
again. Kikelomo made
this revelation while
speaking on Channels
Television during an
interview session.
According to K-Solo
and Kikelomo, the
story of their marriage
break-up was all a
publicity stunt.
They claimed stories
about their breakup
were cooked up as
they were ‘just having
fun’.
“Nothing really
happened. We were
just having fun,”
Kikelomo said during
an exclusive interview
with Channels
Television.
K-Solo also agreed with
her claim and spoke
against her prior
accusations of being
physically assaulted by
her husband.
According to him, “I’m
a showbiz person, If I
don’t do singing, I can
do acting. What you
guys actually saw was
acting. A lot of people
were taking Panadol
for another man’s
headache. But on the
long run it was getting
bigger.

2 dead as hoodlums clash in Lagos

Two persons
were feared dead and
several others
wounded, yesterday, as
hoodlums invaded
some streets in the
Ebute-Meta area of
Lagos.
The immediate cause
of the invasion could
not be ascertained,
while some of the
residents said it could
not be unconnected
with the lingering crisis
in the area.
But the police said it
was a case of robbery,
an assertion that
corroborated the claim
of some residents.
The no fewer than 20
hoodlums, as gathered,
stormed the area at
midnight and started
shooting sporadically.
In the process, vehicles
were reportedly
vandalised.
They reportedly fired
from 12 midnight till
2am before policemen
from Iponri stormed
the scene.
Streets affected
included Brickfield,
Moshood Abiola Road
(formerly Apapa Road),
Daudu Lane and
Olokodana.
After the police left, the
hoodlums reportedly
showed up again at 8
a.m, during which one
of the residents was
shot in the mouth.
Another resident, a
woman was reportedly
bathed with hot water
by the hoodlums.
Shops were also
reportedly broken into
and goods looted,
while unsuspecting
commuters were
attacked. Those
affected, as gathered,
included those
returning from a
viewing centre.
Commenting on the
development,
spokesman for the
Lagos State Police
Command, Mrs. Ngozi
Braide, said six persons
were arrested by the
police, adding that
they would be
transferred to the State
Criminal Investigation
Department.
Meanwhile, police
patrol vans, including
those of the Rapid
Response Squad were
sighted patrolling the
area, yesterday while
an Amoured Personnel
Carrier was stationed
at Abule-Nla,
apparently to nip in
the bud likely reprisal
attack.

Former Rep asks Obi to resign over brewery ownership

Former
member of House of
Representatives, Mr.
Chudi Offodile, has
called on Governor
Peter Obi of Anambra
State, to resign from
office over alleged
conflict of interests on
his involvement in the
establishment of
Intafact Beverages
Limited, SABmiller,
Onitsha commissioned
by President Goodluck
Jonathan yesterday.
This came barely three
days after the
resignation of the
Minister of Power, Prof.
Bath Nnaji over issues
bordering on a conflict
of interests in the on-
going privatisation of
the Power Holding of
Company of Nigeria,
PCHN.
Offodile also urged the
president not to
commission the
company, saying that
to do so will amount
to an endorsement of
what he termed “an
illegality”, as the
company is allegedly
jointly owned by the
state government,
Next International Ltd
owned by Mr. Obi and
his family and another
company-SABmiller
Nigeria Holdings.
“It would amount to
an endorsement of a
sordid affair and may
embolden other
foreigners who design
and put into effect,
different and newer
corruption techniques
with government
officials. In the history
of corruption in
Nigeria, the Onitsha
brewery scandal will
rank as the most
brazen”, he alleged
while speaking with
journalists in Abuja.
Offodile claimed that
the investigations he
conducted at the
Corporate affairs
Commission, CAC,
revealed that the Obi
family owns Next
International Ltd and
that although the
governor claimed he
had resigned as a
director of the
company, his brother,
Mr. Ndihe Obi, is the
current Managing
Director of the
company.
He challenged the
governor to make
public SABmiller’s total
capitalisation and how
much Next paid for its
equity in the new
brewery.
The former lawmaker
also alleged that the
governor revoked the
land belonging to
International Steel
Company, claiming
“overriding public
interest” only to
reallocate it to the
brewery on account of
his personal interest in
the firm.
Offodile acting a
script — Obi’s aide
However, the Senior
Special Assistant to
Governor Obi on Media
and Publicity, Mr.
Valentine Obienyem,
faulted Offodile’s
argument, wondering
why somebody would
call on a governor that
had not done anything
contrary to his oath of
office to resign.
He said: “If you have
been reading the
newspapers, you
would notice that in
the past two months,
Offodile who is not
known to have made
any intellectual
contributions in the
newspapers, suddenly
started to write
regularly on Obi. This
shows that somebody
is calling the tune for
him somewhere.”
On the issue of Next
International investing
in SABmiller,
Obienyem insisted that
Obi resigned his
directorship and
membership of the
Boards of all the
companies in which he
had interests.
The spokesman added
that Mr. Offodile did
not tell the public all
that he saw at the CAC
because according to
him, five other
companies, including
those owned by a
Deltan and a Lagosian
have shares in the
SABmiller.

New Lagos Traffic Law now operational

The much-
awaited gazetting of
the new Lagos State
Road Traffic Law was
completed Thursday,
meaning its
implementation has
commenced 29 days
after Governor
Babatunde Fashola
signed the law.
The gazette, printed by
the Lagos State
Printing Corporation,
Ikeja, is titled; ”a law to
provide for road traffic
administration and
make provisions for
road traffic and vehicle
inspection in Lagos
State and other
connected purposes.”
To mark the law’s final
emergence, the state
Ministry of Rural
Development in
collaboration with its
Transportation
counterpart, yesterday,
held a special
stakeholders’ meeting
on the sensitisation of
the new road traffic
law with the
representatives of
Community
Development
Association, CDAs,
Community
Development Councils,
CDCs, traffic officers,
supervisory councillors
for Agriculture and
heads of departments
in the 20 Local
Government Areas and
37 Local Council
Development Areas,
LCDAs, community
leaders, in Ikeja, Lagos.
At the forum, the
Deputy Governor,
Adejoke Orelope-
Adefulire, who led
other top government
officials on the
occasion, told the
various groups in
attendance that the
new law has come to
stay, urging them to
comply with it and
ensure its proper
implementation in
their respective
domains.
The Attorney-General,
represented by Senior
Special Assistant on
Justice Sector Reforms,
Mr. Olarenwaju
Akinsola, also at the
meeting, explained:
“The new traffic law is
necessary taking
cognisance of the
emerging challenges
that come with the
mega-city status of
Lagos State. A law that
was made for about
300,000 in 1949
cannot in any way take
care of an astounding
population of 20
million today. This
situation makes the
law necessary”.
According to him, since
1949, the law has been
reviewed seven times.
We are just calling it a
new law. But there are
provisions of the 1949
version that are still in
the 2012 law. What is
now new is the
inclusion of
motorcycles and
tricycles, which were
not used for
commercial purposes
in 1949.
Akinsola, stated that
the new law had been
gazetted and that
government would
commence
enforcement of the law
anytime from now.
According to him, after
the law was signed by
the governor, it
became binding on all
but that the
government wanted to
sensitise the public
through advocacy,
which was why the
enforcement was
delayed.
Speaking at the
meeting, Chairman of
the House of Assembly
Committee on
Transportation, Hon.
Bisi Yusuf said the new
traffic law represented
the views, which he
said various interests
and groups expressed
at series of
stakeholders organised
by the legislative arm
before the law was
enacted.
Also speaking, the
lawmaker, who
represented Speaker of
the state House of
Assembly, Hon.
Adeyemi Ikuforiji, said
the law was not
imposed on the people
of Lagos as the
decision was arrived at
after due consultation
with various interest
groups as well as
transport unions,
thereby urging the
residents to make the
law work.
The Assistant
Commissioner of Police
Mr. Tunde Sobulo, who
represented the State
Commissioner of Police,
Mr. Ibrahim Manko,
gave unflinching
support of the Lagos
Police command for
the enforcement
stating that the state
command had been
making efforts to
restore sanity and
order of the state road
before the law was
enacted.

Liverpool’s Carroll joins West Ham on loan

Liverpool striker Andy
Carroll ended months
of speculation over his
future by joining West
Ham on a season-long
loan on Thursday.
Carroll’s future at
Anfield has been in
doubt since Liverpool
manager Brendan
Rodgers admitted the
England forward might
be an awkward fit for
the smooth passing
style he wants the
Reds to use.
West Ham and Carroll’s
former club Newcastle
both made approaches
for the 23-year-old
several weeks ago and,
after Liverpool failed to
secure a better offer, it
is the Hammers who
have won the race for
his signature.
The deal is likely to
bring an end to
Carroll’s disappointing
spell with Liverpool as
West Ham have agreed
an option to sign him
on a permanent basis
for an undisclosed fee
at the end of this
season.
It is a major coup for
newly-promoted West
Ham and boss Sam
Allardyce, who briefly
worked with Carroll at
Newcastle, and the
forward could make his
debut in Saturday’s
Premier League clash
against Fulham at
Upton Park.
“It’s great to be here at
West Ham and all
signed up. I just can’t
wait to get started
now,” Carroll told the
east London club’s
website.
“I want to be playing
games and obviously
hoping to score some
goals. I know the
manager well and
some of the lads, so it
is nice for me to come
to a place where I
know people.
“I’m hoping to add a
lot of goals and create
a few chances. I know
Sam from Newcastle
and he was a massive
reason for me coming.
When I worked with
him at Newcastle it
was great so it was a
no-brainer really.”
Liverpool’s then
manager Kenny
Dalglish paid a club
record £35 million to
sign Carroll from
Newcastle in January
2011 as a replacement
for Fernando Torres
after the Spaniard
joined Chelsea.
After scoring only 11
goals in 58
appearances, Carroll
has been deemed
surplus to
requirements just 18
months later and
Allardyce hopes to
revitalise the striker’s
career at Upton Park.
“I think for all parties
this is a great signing.
Andy is an all-round
footballer, but because
he is tall and one of his
strengths is his aerial
power, everybody
dismisses the ability he
possesses on the floor,”
Allardyce said.
“Hopefully he can score
goals for us and we
will be in a very good
position at the end of
the year in the Premier
League.”

Falconets qualify, edge into semis past brave Mexico

Nigeria have won their
into their second
successive FIFA U-20
Women’s World Cup
semi-final with a hard-
fought 1-0 extra-time
victory over a resilient
Mexico in Tokyo.
Nigeria, beaten finalists
in Germany two years
ago, were dominant
throughout the first
hour, but were unable
to make the
breakthrough on the
scoreboard until Desire
Oparanozie’s decisive
goal on 109 minutes.
The Africans made
much of the early
running and appeared
to have a crucial early
goal as Francisca
Ordega’s shot deflected
past goalkeeper Cecilia
Santiago on the
quarter-hour, only for
the offside flag to be
raised for an earlier
infringement.
Almost immediately
Oparanozie forced
Santiago into a
sprawling save as
Nigeria looked to turn
the screws in the late
afternoon heat.
With far more
possession in midfield
Nigeria were inching
their way closer to
breaking the deadlock
and Oparanozie rattled
the crossbar with her
shot eight minutes
before the interval.
The always dangerous
Sofia Huerta, scorer of
three goals in the
tournament, made a
rare incursion into the
Africans’ penalty area
just before the break,
to provide some
impetus for the
Mexicans.
However, the one-way
traffic continued
immediately upon the
resumption, much to
the delight of a large
and buoyant group of
Nigeria supporters,
whose tunes and
singing resonated
around the National
Stadium throughout
the match.
Approaching the hour
mark Santiago again
thwarted the Africans
with an important
block from Gloria
Ofoegbu’s effort, and
then again a few
minutes later from
Oparanozie.
Mexico slowly started
to make an impression
and enjoyed a rare
sight of goal midway
through the second
half, only for
inspirational skipper
Nayeli Rangel to push
her back-post header
narrowly over.
Nigeria’s midfield play
became less cohesive
and Mexico could have
won it in injury time as
a corner looped onto
the crossbar.
A fairly disjointed
period of extra time
was enlivened only on
a few occasions,
notably by Mexico’s
Yamile Franco hitting
the bar with an angled
free-kick.
With the match
starting to swing back
Mexico’s way, it was
Nigeria who conjured a
winner, with
Oparanozie looping a
perfectly executed
header from Ugo
Njoku’s cross over a
stranded Santiago.

S-East CAN faults Nnaji’s resignation, as PHCN workers celebrate in Enugu

THE Christian
Association of Nigeria,
CAN, South East Zone,
Wednesday,
condemned the
resignation of the
Minister of Power,
Professor Bath Nnaji
from office, describing
it as “a very disgraceful
and disappointing
situation for the people
of the South East
geopolitical zone.”
The association made
this known in Enugu
just as workers of the
Power Holding
Company of Nigeria,
PHCN in Enugu Zonal
Office hailed Nnaji’s
exit saying the
resignation “is an
answer to our prayers”.
Vanguard observed at
the Enugu zonal office
that the workers
danced round the
portrait of Nnaji and
thanked God for the
development, saying
the man whose only
desire was to send
them packing without
minding the
consequences on their
lives after serving the
nation for several
years, had been shown
the way out.
But officials of National
Union of Electricity
Employees, NUEE in the
zone refused to
comment on the
development.
The Chairman of CAN
South East and
Anglican Bishop of
Enugu Diocese, Rt.
Reverend Dr.
Emmanuel Chukwuma,
who spoke with
newsmen in Enugu,
called on President
Goodluck Jonathan to
ensure that he picked
Nnaji’s successor from
Enugu State.
He said it was
unfortunate that the
South East had
continued to lose top
positions through
resignation and called
on political office
holders in the zone to
re-examine themselves
to avert such
development in future.
The Anglican Bishop,
who also spoke on the
resurgence of
kidnapping in Enugu
State, called for the
immediate removal of
the Enugu State
Commissioner of police,
alleging that security
had collapsed since he
was posted to the
state.
He expressed concern
over the way the police
commissioner has been
handling security
issues in the state,
pointing out that that
the raping of women
in Opi Nsukka, which
had become very
worrisome to many,
has not been well
handled.
On the plan by CBN to
introduce the N5000
note, the cleric urged
Jonathan not to
approve the
production of the note
on the ground that it
would not help the
nation’s economy in
any way.

Suspected ritualists behead 16-yr-old girl in Anambra

A 16 year-old
Miss Nwanneka Odah
was, yesterday,
beheaded by a three -
man gang suspected to
be ritual killers at
Nawfia in Njikoka Local
Government Area of
Anambra State.
This came as the Awka
branch manager of a
new generation bank,
(name withheld), Mr.
Tochukwu Nnadi, was
yesterday kidnapped
about 7.30am on his
way to the office.
Nwanneka was said to
be hawking
groundnuts along the
Nawfia –Awka road
close to Nawfia
Comprehensive
Secondary School
when the three young
men allegedly
pretended as if they
wanted to buy
groundnuts from her
only for one of them to
use a machete to cut
off her head when she
bent down to sell the
groundnuts to them.
A relation of the
deceased, Mr. Friday
Ogalagu described the
situation as terrible,
lamenting that he had
never seen such a thing
in his life.
He said: “I was not
there when it
happened, but I was
told that my cousin
was stopped by three
men who said they
wanted to buy
groundnuts. While two
of them were on the
road side, the third,
who dressed like a
mad man was standing
closely.
When the girl bent
down to put the
ground nuts for them,
the one close by
brought out what
somebody said looked
like an axe and
beheaded the girl. An
Okada rider plying the
road who saw what
happened stopped and
the three men ran into
the bush, leaving their
victim whose head was
already severed,
struggling for life.”
Ogalagu said that it
was when people
began to make
inquiries about the
parents of the girl that
he was contacted.
According to Ogalagu
who claimed to be
training the girl since
childhood, the body
had been deposited at
the Amaku General
Hospital in Awka, while
the parents who live in
Ebonyi had been
contacted.
Anambra State Police
Public Relations Officer,
PPRO, Mr. Raphael
Uzoigwe, confirmed
the incident, saying the
matter had been
referred to the State
Criminal Investigation
Department, CID, for
investigation.
Banker kidnapped in
Awka
A staff in the bank said
there had not been any
contact with the
kidnappers, lamenting
that the incident had
put fears among
bankers.
It was gathered that
the abductors waited
for their victim in two
cars at the Iyiagu area
of the capital city with
doors of their cars
opened and as he
drove close to the area,
they used one of the
cars to block him and
dragged him out of his
car into their own and
drove off.
The State Police
Command, however
said the matter had
not been reported to it
at the time of filing the
report.
Police spokesman, Mr.
Raphael Uzoigwe, told
reporters that he had
made contacts with the
Central Police Station
and the B-division in
the command, claiming
no such case was
reported.

Tinubu becomes LAUTECH Chancellor

The
governments of Oyo
and Osun states,
Tuesday, appointed
former Lagos State
governor and National
Leader of the Action
Congress of Nigeria,
ACN, Asiwaju Bola
Tinubu, as Chancellor of
Ladoke Akintola
University of
Technology, LAUTECH,
Ogbomoso.
LAUTECH, jointly owned
by the two state
governments, was
established by the old
Oyo State in 1988.
A statement in Ibadan,
by Dr. Festus Adedayo,
Special Adviser to
Governor Abiola
Ajimobi on Media, said
the choice of Tinubu, a
financial expert,
accountant and
administrator, was
arrived at after
extensive deliberations
between the
governments of the
two owner-states.
He said Tinubu is
expected to bring his
administrative
ingenuity and vast
experience in public
management to bear
on the running of the
institution and
reposition it to meet
the standard of its
peers all over the
world.

Nigeria loses $400bn to oil thieves – Ezekwesili

Erstwhile Vice
President of the World
Bank for Africa, Dr Oby
Ezekwesili,Tuesday,
said Nigeria has lost
more than $400 billion
to oil thieves since she
attained independence
in 1960.
Ezekwesili, who further
regretted that as much
as 20 percent of the
entire budget for
capital expenditure in
Nigeria ended in
private pockets
annually, noted that
whereas oil accounts
for about 90 percent of
the value of Nigeria’s
exports, over 80
percent of the fund
ends up in the hands of
one percent of the
country’s population.
The former Minister of
Education who made
these startling
revelations in a paper
she presented at the
ongoing 52nd Annual
General Meeting, AGM,
of the Nigerian Bar
Association, NBA, in
Abuja, stressed that
“poor governance of
public resources and
assets in Nigeria is
worsening at every
level of government.”
Part of her speech
entitled “Corruption,
National Development,
The Bar and The
Judiciary,” reads, “the
negative effects of
corruption is starkly
demonstrated by the
fact that based on
current track record,
Nigeria will miss the
Millennium
Development Goals,
MDGs, target set in
2000 despite the
richness of its natural
and human resource
endowments.
“There is no doubt that
at the heart of any
progress towards
meeting these goals is
the quality of
governance at all levels
of government and yet
the general perception
since validated by the
revealed large scale
corruption in the
petroleum sector
especially but not
limited to the
management of the
subsidy scheme by
relevant agencies of
government is that
there is poor
governance of public
resources and assets in
Nigeria at every level
of government.
“Poor governance of
public resources and
assets in Nigeria is
worsening at every
level of government,
across our institutions
of state. The other and
perhaps more
significant way
corruption hurts is its
impact on the
government bottom
line and those teacher-
less, desk-less schools
only hint at the extent
of the problem in
Nigeria. An estimated
$400 billion of the
country’s oil revenue
has been stolen or
misspent since the
country’s
independence in
1960.”
According to her, “in
one study by my
former institution the
World Bank, a data
modeling revealed that
annual worldwide
losses due to
corruption amount to
between one to four
thousand US Dollars or
two percent of the
world’s gross economic
output. The Global
Financial Integrity
estimated that
between 1970 and
2008 Africa lost more
than $854 billion in
illicit financial outflows,
an amount which is far
in excess of official
development inflows.
“Another report of the
Transparency
International, TI, put
the amount of bribes
companies paid
politicians and other
public officials in
developing and
transiting economies
annually at $ 40 billion
in 2009 and consider
that Africa would
constitute major part
of”.
Nevertheless,
Ezekwesili, noted that
civil society
organizations and
umbrella bodies like
the NBA, the judiciary,
could play a significant
role towards making
public budgeting more
transparent and
accountable by
engaging in the
various stages of the
budget process with a
view to strengthening
the oversight process
and accountability in
the use of public
resources.
She said: “An
independent Judiciary
and the Bar is
important for
preserving the rule of
law and is, therefore,
most important facet
of good governance.
The judicial system has
an important role to
play ultimately in
ensuring better public
governance. There is
no area where the
judgment of the
Supreme Court has not
played a significant
role in the good
governance of any
nation whether in
environment, human
rights, gender justice,
education, minorities,
and police reforms,
among other.
“Nigerians are at once
disappointed and
worried for your
profession and the
entire justice system,
the rule of law one of
the most significant
characteristics of good
governance prevails
because India has an
independent judiciary
that has been
sustained because of
the support and
assistance from an
independent Bar which
has been fearless in
advocating the cause
of the underprivileged,
the deprived”.
“Something tells me
that some if you would
rise into action and
become the Remnant
group that has always
historically paid the
price for the greatness
if the multitude. There
is a price to be laid for
the return of our Lady
Justice. So my last
words are, “who
among you is ready to

Madrid Agree to Sign Modric from Tottenham

Tottenham have reached
an agreement with Real
Madrid for the transfer of
Luka Modric for a fee in
the region of £30m.
The Croatia midfielder, 26,
will travel to Spain on
Monday for a medical
before signing a five-year
contract.
Tottenham also
announced they are
entering a partnership
with Real Madrid, reports
the BBC.
The agreement will see
the two clubs working
together in respect of
players, coaching and
commercial relationships.
"Luka has been a terrific
player for us and, while
we preferred not to part
with him, we are pleased
that it is to Real Madrid, a
club with which we now
look forward to sharing a
long and productive
partnership," said
Tottenham chairman,
Daniel Levy.
Modric joined Tottenham
in 2008 in a £16.5m deal
from Croatian side,
Dinamo Zagreb.
He made over 150
appearances for the
London club, scoring 17
goals.
Real Madrid president
Florentino Perez
Rodriguez added: "We are
delighted to welcome
Luka and look forward to
working closely with
Tottenham in the coming
years."
Initially playing as a
defensive midfielder under
former manager Juande
Ramos, Modric was moved
into a more advanced role
when Harry Redknapp
became manager in
October 2008.

FAZE: I'm Searching for My Wife

He made his name as one
of the members of the
defunct plantashuz boiz
that also produced singers
like Tuface Idibia and
Blackface. He’s been
underground for a while
until recently when he
signed a management
deal with Now Muzik. He is
now out with his new
album, titled Refazed.
Born Chibuzor Orji, Faze as
he’s widely known talks to
GBENGA BADA about his
new effort
What has been happening
to Faze?
Faze has been busy. I have
been working on my new
project - The Refazed
Album Project - which is
out now. Before that, I
took some time out to
evaluate myself as an
individual and as an
artiste and lastly the
entertainment industry.
The result of all of that is
what gave birth to the
term ‘ Refazed’. So, it’s safe
to say I have been
refazing. During that time,
I also starred in a movie
titled, Alero’s symphony.
What influenced the
decision to sign a
management deal with
Now Muzik?
I signed a deal with Now
Muzik because of the
impact they have on the
careers of artistes they
have managed and
currently do.
Tell us more about your
latest album?
The recording of the
Refazed album was
challenging because I had
to take time out to listen
to new sounds and learn
more about recent trends
while not losing my focus.
The album is diverse in
content; it consists of R&B,
Reggae, Afro Pop ,Pop and
other genres. I also did an
Igbo song and featured
Vector, Blackface and
2Face in separate tracks.
You’ve been in the
industry for over a decade.
What is your take on the
industry?
The industry has improved
immensely. New acts, new
labels, new ideas spring
up everyday. Above all,
the entertainment
industry is becoming a
force to reckon with all
over Africa and structures
are being put in place here
and there to ensure we
get the best from our
efforts in the nearest
future.
Have you feared well since
you began?
I would say I have fared
well. But I am looking to
do better. The minute you
get comfortable with
where you are in life is
when you fail to progress.
Financially, how have you
feared?
Monetarily, I would say I
can do much better. The
industry has more
opportunities today
compared to earlier days.
Who really is Faze?
Hmmm, Faze is a simple
guy who likes real people
and appreciates hard work
and honesty.
When would you be tying
the nuptial knot?
Nuptial Knot? when the
time is right but I’m
searching now though.
What has the response
been since your album
release?
The response to the
Refazed album has been
totally positive and
inspiring. In terms of
media support, sales and
comments. I would like to
use this medium to thank
everyone who has
contributed to the Refazed
project.

Expendables 2 Continues to Top Box Office

Expendables 2 has
continued its grip on the
North American box office
chart, holding onto the
number one spot for a
second consecutive week.
The movie, which sees
action stars including
Sylvester Stallone, Arnold
Schwarzenegger and
Bruce Willis reunite, took
$13.5m (£8.5m), reports
the BBC.
The Bourne Legacy
remained at two in its
third week of release, with
$9.3m.
Stop-motion comedy
ParaNorman, about a boy
who helps save his town
from a zombie invasion,
was at three.
Typical of late summer
openings, other new
releases performed
weakly in the chart.
Thriller Premium Rush,
starring Joseph Gordon
Levitt as a bike messenger
chased through New York
by a policeman who
wants an envelope he's
carrying, opened at seven
with $6.3m.
And low-budget road-
chase comedy Hit & Run,
starring real-life couple
Dax Shepard and Kristen
Bell, entered at 10 with
$4.7m.
With less competition
from big Hollywood films,
it allowed anti-President
Barack Obama
documentary, 2016:
Obama's America, to land
at number eight.
After opening in limited
release in July, it expanded
nationwide ahead of the
Republican National
Convention to formally
nominate Mitt Romney as
Obama's challenger in the
presidential race.
The film is a conservative
critique envisioning what
the US would look like
four years from now if
Obama was re-elected.
"It's extremely rare for a
documentary to break into
the top 10, but August can
be a land of opportunity
for smaller films," Paul
Dergarabedian, box office
analyst for Hollywood.com
said.
"Also, there's the fact that
this is a very conservative
film. Normally, it's Michael
Moore-branded
documentaries, the liberal
documentaries, that make
all the money."
The film has so far taken
$9.1m domestically, but
the figure is still far away
from other political
documentaries - Moore's
Fahrenheit 9/11 opened at
number one with $23.9m
in June 2004, and went on
to become the US's top-
grossing documentary
taking $119.1m.

Free medical services for journalists at 8th West African Health confab

MEDIA practitioners at
tending the 8th West
African Health
Conference and
Exhibition, WAH
Nigeria 2012, are to
benefit from
comprehensive medical
checks, while the event
lasts.
The event organisers
say there would also
be take-home
sphygnomethers and
other medical devices
designed for home use.
Journalists would be
checked for common
medical conditions of
public health concern.
In a statement,
Coordinator, WAH
2012, Mr. Solomon
Sobade, said the
journalists would be
screened for
cardiovascular diseases,
kidney and liver
function, HIV, malaria,
among others.
“Journalists in Nigeria
have become
endangered specie of
professionals because
they are exposed to
various degrees of risks
that compromise their
total well-being,”
Sobade said.
He said the media
plays critical role in
general health and by
implication, wealth of
the country and
continent, but added
that this could only be
done effectively if the
practitioners are in
perfect state of health
themselves.
“It is common
knowledge that media
practitioners in the
country and Africa as a
whole are not well
remunerated. So it is
usually a huge
challenge for them to
pool resources from
their meagre salaries
together against other
competing needs to do
medical checks. We
only see them run to
the hospitals when
they are down.”
WAH Nigeria 2012
marks a return of the
event, which is the
most outstanding of
such in West Africa, to
Nigeria as the last
edition was hosted in
Accra.
A special media
training session on
medical and health
conference coverage
would also hold during
the event which holds
September 5-7, 2012
at the new Expo Centre
of Eko Hotel and
Towers, Victoria Island,
Lagos.

Police arrest ‘prophet’ for man’s death

A self-
acclaimed Man of God,
was weekend, arrested
in connection with the
alleged death of a
motorcyclist in the
Bariga area of Lagos.
The deceased identified
as Sule Ade reportedly
left the suspect’s
apartment on Ajenifuja
Street, Bariga, about 8
p.m. on Saturday, but
started bleeding as he
was about mounting
his motorbike. He was
said to have fell and
died on the spot.
Reports, however, said
no one could say what
his mission was at the
home of the suspect,
popularly called
prophet.
While some claimed he
went there for prayers
over an unknown
ailment, others said he
went there for a
session of deliverance
prayers.
Spokesman for the
Lagos State Police
Command, Ngozi
Braide, confirmed the
incident, stating that
the suspect, identified
as ‘Prophet’ John
Jegun, had been
transferred to the State
Criminal Investigation
Department for further
investigation.
She said: ”Ade visited
the ‘prophet’ about
6.30 p.m. on Saturday
and left after two
hours. His widow
reported the case the
following day at the
Bariga Police Division,
and the ‘prophet’ was
apprehended.”
She did not give
further details, but said
investigation was on.

Rights group kicks against N5,000 notes, state police

Forum for
Justice and Human
Rights Defence, FJHR,
has kicked against the
proposed introduction
of N5,000 currency
denomination by
Central Bank of Nigeria,
CBN. It also condemned
calls for state police,
noting that it was
capable of worsening
the already bad
security and human
right situations in the
country.
National Co-ordinator,
of the group, Mr.
Oghenejabor Ikimi, in a
statement in Asaba,
Delta State, yesterday,
said: “We make bold to
say that economically,
there is no sense in
embarking on such
suicidal venture of
N5000 bill, as our
economy will be worse
for it, hence we oppose
the entire exercise.
“If N5000 single note
in circulation, same
would increase official
corruption, money
laundering, inflation
and further devalue
the naira, as we are a
nation that heavily
depends on
importation.
On the State Police, he
said “we reject same as
we are not ripe for
same as a nation. We,
however, concede that
in a true Federation,
component states are
allowed to own their
own police and even
prisons outfits.
“State Police is not an
antidote to the
worsening state of
insecurity nationwide
and more strongly,
many Nigerians
amongst other factors
fear that state
governors would hijack
police outfits in their
respective states the
way they have hijacked
their various state

Wutah to sue Flavour

Defunct Ghanaian
group,Wutah, may be
heading to the law
courts to seek redress
over a case of
copyright abuse
against Nigerian high-
life singer, Flavour
N’abania.
Our investigation
revealed that the
group plan to sue the
singer after claims of
theft of intellectual
property. Management
of the duo, made up of
Wutah Kobby and
Wutah PV, say that
they were not pleased
with the ‘Kwarikwa’
song recently released
by Flavour, where he
featured Fali Ipupa.
*Wutahs and Flavour
The duo have also
accused Flavour of
‘stealing’ the chorus,
rhythm, rhyme and the
opening saxophone
beat used in their song,
Kotosa, with total
disregard for their right
as the legitimate
owners of the song.
Kotosa was a hit the
Ghana in 2008 before
the two parted ways in
2010, while Kwarikwa
was released mid
2011 three years after.

Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa marked their home debuts with goals

Robin van Persie and
Shinji Kagawa marked
their home debuts
with goals as
Manchester United
picked up their first
points of the season
with a 3-2 victory over
Fulham, but Wayne
Rooney suffered a
potentially serious
injury in the closing

Sir Alex Ferguson

surprise as the United
manager left Rooney
on the bench and gave
van Persie his first start
in response to
Monday’s surprise 1-0
defeat at Everton.
It looked a gamble
when Damien Duff
opened the scoring in
the third minute but
van Persie scored a first
goal since his £24
million move from
Arsenal and Japan
midfielder Kagawa
touched in from close-
range to add a second.
Rafael headed in the
third but Nemanja
Vidic’s own goal halved
the lead before Rooney
was brought on for the
final 22 minutes.
The England forward
was clearly desperate
to make an impression
but instead finished
the match stretchered
off in agony after
suffering a deep gash
to his thigh when he
attempted to block
Hugo Rodallega’s
stoppage-time effort.
Six-time Olympic gold
medallist Usain Bolt
was paraded on the
pitch before the match
with the home fans
urging Ferguson to
sign the Jamaican.
But the sprinter had
not even reached his
seat in the directors’
box when Fulham took
a surprise lead.
Michael Carrick clipped
Mladen Petric on the
edge of the area and a
Bryan Ruiz free-kick
picked out Duff, who
shrugged off Ashley
Young, to turn a low
short past David de Gea
at the near post.
United immediately
pressed for an
equaliser but with van
Persie dropping into
deep and wide areas,
there was no-one in
the box when Kagawa
fed Ashley Young, who
put a fine cross into the
area.
But after nine minutes,
United pulled
themselves level with
van Persie scoring with
his first shot in United
colours.
Anderson clipped a ball
left to Patrice Evra and
the French defender
sent over a cross that
van Persie met on the
half-volley, glancing
the ball across his body
and past the helpless
Mark Schwarzer.
The home team
maintained all of the
pressure but struggled
to carve out decent
openings, with Rafael
lifting a shot over and
Kagawa having a long-
range effort easily held
by Schwarzer.
Ten minutes before the
interval United moved
in front with Fulham’s
players furiously
appealing for offside.
Van Persie’s corner was
headed away by
Mahamadou Diarra and
Tom Cleverley’s
powerful rebound was
pushed out by
Schwarzer only as far
as Kagawa, who
finished from a couple
of yards.
Moments later, United
came close to adding a
third when Kagawa’s
effort came back off
the post and Schwarzer
saved Young’s follow-
up before Rafael
touched in from an
offside position.
But the Brazilian did
add United’s third
when Fulham failed to
clear van Persie’s
corner and Young lifted
a cross to the far post
for the right-back to
head in for his first
goal since December
2009.
The frenzied action
continued when De
Gea blocked Duff’s
effort and then turned
Petric’s effort on to the
bar.
United continued to
dominate after the
restart without ever
troubling Schwarzer.
And they allowed
Martin Jol’s team back
into the contest
midway through the
second period with a
De Gea error.
Matthew Briggs swung
in a cross from the left
that De Gea failed to
claim and the ball
bounced in off Vidic.
Rooney was brought
on with a quarter of
the match left but De
Gea was forced into
two impressive saves
from Moussa Dembele
— one from distance
and one from close-
range — to preserve
United’s advantage.
Rooney headed wide
from a van Persie free-
kick and then hit a
free-kick of his own
straight at the wall
before suffering his
late injury blow that
will leave United and
England sweating over
his fitness.

Chelsea win Newcastle 2-0

Chelsea who are
setting the early pace
as the European
champions cemented
their position on top of
the table with a 2-0
win against Newcastle
United at Stamford
Bridge.
Roberto Di Matteo’s
side, who have
recorded three
successive victories,
went ahead in the
22nd minute when
Eden Hazard drilled
home his first Chelsea
goal from the penalty
spot after a Vurnon
Anita foul on Fernando
Torres.
Spain striker Torres
added the second goal
himself, lashing in from
Hazard’s back-heel just
before half-time.
Everton, often
hampered by slow
starts to the season,
also maintained their
100 percent record
with a 3-1 win over
10-man Aston Villa.
South Africa midfielder
Steven Pienaar gave
David Moyes’ side the
perfect start as he
struck in the third
minute at Villa Park.
Marouane Fellaini
increased the lead with
a 31st-minute header
and Croatia striker
Nikica Jelavic swept
home a Leighton
Baines cross just before
half-time.
Villa defender Ciaran
Clark earned a straight
red card for a
professional foul on
Jelavic in the second
half and Karim El
Ahmadi’s 74th-minute
goal was little
consolation for the
hosts.
Andre Villas-Boas was
denied a first win as
Tottenham Hotspur
manager as James
Morrison’s late goal
secured a 1-1 draw for
West Bromwich Albion
at White Hart Lane.
Benoit Assou-Ekotto
struck for Tottenham in
the 74th minute with a
deflected shot, but
Steve Clarke’s side
levelled through
Morrison in stoppage
time.
“It is very important to
get that first win but
there are still 36 games
ahead of us,” Villas-
Boas said. “We have
one more point than
we did this time last
year.”
Norwich City and QPR,
both thrashed 5-0 last
weekend, shared the
spoils in a 1-1 draw at
Carrow Road.
Chris Hughton’s side
took the lead through
Simeon Jackson’s 11th-
minute header, but
QPR were level within
nine minutes when
Bobby Zamora
converted the rebound
after Djibril Cisse’s
penalty was saved by
John Ruddy.
Wigan Athletic showed
there is life after Victor
Moses as the Latics
won 2-0 at
Southampton.
With Nigeria forward
Moses having joined
Chelsea on Friday,
Wigan coach Roberto
Martinez needed his
other forwards to step
up and Franco Di Santo
rose to the challenge
as the Argentine
hammered a powerful
shot into the roof of
the net in the 51st
minute.
Arouna Kone
completed Wigan’s
victory with a fine solo
effort in the 89th
minute.
Sunderland’s match
against Reading was
postponed less than 90
minutes before kick-off
due to a waterlogged
pitch at the Stadium of
Light.
On Sunday, Arsenal
travel to Stoke City and
champions Manchester
City take on Liverpool
at Anfield.

SUICIDAL! How Police Corporal killed self after shooting wife, daughters

…I will always love and
forgive my husband,
cries wife
The ugly incident that
took place last Sunday
at Edda village in
Ugwuachara, Ebonyi
local government area
in Ebonyi State has
been described by
many as black Sunday.
This is as a result of the
horrific scenario that
occurred in a
compound, located
directly behind Kings
and Queen primary and
secondary school,
along Onwa Ali Onwa
street of the State.
The event which took
place in the morning
hours of the fateful day
led to the death of
Corporal Anthony
Ugwuoke who shot
himself after shooting
his wife, Mrs. Nkechi,
30, at the neck and
shoulder, and his two
daughters, Adaeze, 3,
and chidinma, 1, on the
hand and leg
respectively.
When Crime Guard
visited the scene of the
incident, occupants of
the compound had
deserted the area for
fear of being arrested
by the police as only
two persons were seen
in the compound
discussing the ugly
episode which took
place on August
19,2012.
Speaking with Crime
Guard, the wife of the
deceased who is
presently receiving
treatment at the
Female Surgical Ward
of Federal Teaching
Hospital Abakaliki,
FETHA, looked visibly
confused and
wondered why her
husband committed
suicide by shooting
himself on the chest.
The woman, who was
still nursing bullet
wounds, looked upon
God and the medical
personnels for the
restoration of her
health and that of her
two children. According
to her, she will always
love and forgive her
husband despite the
ugly incident that
happened to her.
Recounting her
ordeal,she said: “That
Sunday, my husband
told me that he
wanted to go to my
place with his friend
for condolence visit.
After he finished
preparing, he told me
that he was ready to
go and I said okay,
when you are coming
back, please help me
bring one of my sisters,
a nine-year-old girl,
from the village who
will be helping me out
with domestic work.
…Wounded eldest
daughter
After I said this, he got
angry and started
saying that he was not
bringing anybody; that
he did not marry me
for anybody and that
he was not even going
to my place anymore.
And he insisted that I
should pack my things
and go. I was surprised
because as at that
morning, we have not
had any quarrel or
fight. As he was
quarreling, his friend
who came to escort
him to my place told
him that it has not
gotten to that and that
he should take it easy.
“But my husband
insisted that I should
pack my things and go.
So, based on the advice
of his friend, I decided
to gradually gather my
things including my
clothing. Then the
friend left the house to
go and take care of his
family. I had the
premonition to tell him
to stay in the house
but I didn’t.
So, by the time he left,
I started gathering my
things, then my
husband told me to
only collect my clothes
and forget about that
of the children. In fact,
that I should leave the
children with him, if
they die let them die.
So, as I continued
gathering my clothes,
my husband came and
said that I should select
only the ones I bought
with my money, and
leave behind the ones
he bought for me.
“In the process, I don’t
know what came over
him, he rushed to the
door and locked it with
key. Before I could
realize what was
happening, he started
beating me and then
he brought out a pistol
and shot me on the
neck and on my
shoulders, shot my two
daughters and shot
himself on the chest.”
Mrs.
Nkechi
who is
from
Ikwo
local
government area of
the state advised her
fellow women to mind
the way they treat
their husbands,
considering her present
predicament and
appealed to the State
government to come
to her rescue by
assisting her train the
children and pay their
hospital bills.
“My advice is that as
they have seen my
condition and what has
happened, they should
watch the way they
treat their husband. My
appeal to the state
government is that
they should come to
my aid to assist me
train my children. I will
forever forgive my
husband; despite what
has happened, I still
love him.” (starts
crying).
One of the neighbors
who pleaded
anonymity described
the wife of the
deceased as very quiet
and respectable
person. She noted that
“the wife teaches at
the school behind the
yard, Kings and Queen’s
nursery and primary
school. She just came
back from the village
about a week ago after
she left the house
about three weeks
because the husband
beat her up and chased
her out of the house,
giving her big injury on
the eyes.”
Another neighbor who
also did not want his
name mentioned said
the deceased (Mr.
Ugwuoke who hails
from Nsukka in Enugu
State) was possessed
with bad spirit. He
described him as an
arrogant policeman
who usually
misbehaves and beats
up his wife on a
regular bases.
According to him:
“When I returned from
church, I noticed that
the compound was
unusually quiet. Then I
met a neighbor who
told me what had
transpired.
The late corporal has
not been a good
neighbor; he has
always been beating
up the wife. At one
time, I intervened and I
even fought with the
man because of this his
behavior. I even took
the caretaker and one
other tenant and we
went to police station
last October to report
the matter to the DPO;
that in case the man
killed somebody in the
yard, none of the
tenants should be held
responsible.
“The man is like
possessed with bad
spirit because he
doesn’t greet anybody.
He doesn’t go to
church. It is even
recently that we got to
know his name despite
the fact that he was
one of the first tenants
that packed into this
yard. Also he was in
the habit of smoking
Indian hemp.”
The Divisional Police
Officer,DPO, Kpirikpiri
Police Station,
Superintendent
Sampson Etta who
wondered why the late
Corporal decided to
end his life by
committing suicide,
noted that he
(Ugwuoke) shot his
wife at the upper
shoulder and at the
back of the neck, while
his children sustained
various degree of
injuries at the leg and
hand resulting from
gun shots.
According to him, the
police on receiving
information about the
gruesome act, rushed
to the scene, rescued
the wife and children
to the Federal Teaching
Hospital, FETHA, where
they are receiving
medical attention.
Etta stressed that there
was no need for the
occupants residing
where the Corporal
committed suicide to
be on the ran as it was
clear that nobody had
a hand in his death. He
called on them to
remain law abiding
and go about their
businesses.
It should be recalled
that on August 19, a
police corporal, Mr.
Anthony Ugwoke
attached to B’
operations in Abakaliki,
Ebonyi state and an
orderly to a High Court
Judge (name withheld)
shot himself dead after
shooting his 30 year
old wife, Mrs. Nkechi
Ugwuoke and his two
daughters.
Meanwhile,
speculations are still
rife that the deceased
committed the
dastardly act under
certain level of
influence.
The Police Public
Relations Officer, PPRO,
Ebonyi state command,
Deputy Superintendent
of Police, DSP, Sylvester
Igbo who confirmed
the incident, said the
body of the deceased
had been deposited in
the mortuary of the
Federal Teaching
Hospital, Abakaliki,
FETHA.
According to Mr. Igbo,
one berretta pistol,
expended shells and
one live ammunition
were recovered from
the scene. He said the
command had begun
full scale investigation
to unravel the
circumstances that led
to the incident.

2 students jailed 4 yrs for stealing Okada

Abeokuta Magistrate’s
Court, yesterday,
sentenced two
students to two years
imprisonment for
stealing a motorcycle
valued at N 100,000.
According to the
prosecutor, Mr Sunday
Eigbejiale, the accused
persons, Abdullahi
Akinloye (20) and
Lekan Babatunde (23)
were SS2 students.
He said the offence was
committed on May 25
about 3.30 a.m. at 5,
Sodeke Street in the
Abeokuta metropolis.
Eigbejiale told the
court that the
complainant, Mr. Wali
Ogbonaya, parked his
motorcycle in his
compound at night and
in the morning
discovered that it had
been stolen.
He said: “Upon enquiry,
he (Ogbonaya)
discovered that two
vigilantes saw the
accused persons with
the motorcycle and
interrogated them.
“Akinloye and
Babatunde confessed
to stealing the
motorcycle, they were
arrested and taken to
Adatan Police Station.”

Facebook murder: ‘I was a victim of Cynthia’s killers’

A model, yesterday,
showed up at the
headquarters of Lagos
State Police Command
in Ikeja, claiming she
was a victim of the two
undergraduates, who
confessed to have
killed Cynthia, the only
daughter of Gen. Frank
Osokogu(rtd), in a hotel
located in Lake View
Estate in Amuwo
Odofin, Lagos.
The lady, whose
identity could not be
ascertained, arrived the
Police Command at
noon, demanding to
speak only with the
Commissioner of Police,
Mr. Umar Manko.
She was directed to the
CP’s waiting room
before being ushered
to the CP’s office,
where she described
herself as a model.
She reportedly told the
CP that she was at the
Command in respect of
the suspects. She said
the two
undergraduates,
Nwabufo Okwumo,
and his cousin, Odera
Ezekiel, were the same
persons that
dispossessed her of her
belongings in a hotel in
Festac.
However, Vanguard
could not get a
detailed account of her
ordeal in the hands of
the suspects, as the CP
was said to have
immediately directed
her to the Area E
Commander, Mr. Dan
Okoro, who led the
team of investigators
that uncovered the
suspects’ activities.
When contacted, the
Command’s boss
confirmed the visit,
explaining that he
directed her to the
Commander so that
she could physically
identify the suspects.
He called on other
females, who had
fallen victims to show
up.
He said: “Other victims
are advised to show up
so that if there is any
need to expand our
investigation, we will
do so.”
Meanwhile, when
Vanguard, yesterday,
visited hotel in Lake
View Estate, where the
post-graduate student
of Nassarawa State
University met her
sudden end, no one
could offer
explanation.
Rather, a private
security guard claimed
that none of the
managers was around,
and referred the
reporter to the Police.

Woman jailed for removing opponent’s 4 teeth

An Upper Area
Court in Gwagwalada
on Thursday sentenced
Eucharia Mwachukwu
to six months
imprisonment for
causing grievous hurt
to one Rakiya Umar.
The judge, Mr Waziri
Adamu, however, gave
her an option of
N5,000 fine.
Adamu said that the
prosecution had
proved beyond
reasonable doubt that
the convict committed
the offence.
Mr Luke Elemechi, the
defence counsel, said
his client was a first
offender and prayed
the court to tamper
justice with mercy.
He said the convict was
a widow and the only
person taking care of
her children, adding
that any harsh
punishment would not
only affect her but also
her dependants.
The prosecutor, Insp
Martha Paul, told the
court that the convict
had dragged the
complainant into a
fight which resulted in
the removal of four of
the complainant’s
teeth.
Paul said that the
offence, to which the
convict had pleaded
not guilty, was
committed in 2010,
adding that it
contravened Section
241 of the Penal Code.
Delivering judgment,
Adamu said that the
evidence presented by
the prosecution had
helped the case.
“The three witnesses
presented by the
prosecution before the
court all testified by
law with concrete
evidence.
“After listening
carefully to the
evidence of the three
witnesses, the court
hereby rules that the
prosecution has
successfully proved
their case,’’ he said.
Adamu said the offence
committed by the
convict was a
voluntary one and with
the intent to cause
hurt.
He added that the
evidence of the
complainant herself
showed that she was
dragged into the fight
by the convict.
He said any party that
was not satisfied with
the judgment could
appeal to a higher
court. (NAN)

Barcelona 3-2 Real Madrid

The Spanish Super Cup
remains delicately poised
after Barcelona secured a
3-2 win against Real
Madrid in a pulsating first
leg.
Real's Cristiano Ronaldo
first headed in a corner,
which Pedro levelled
immediately from the
kick-off.Lionel Messi scored a
penalty after Andres
Iniesta was fouled, before
Xavi slotted home a
sublime third.
Angel Di Maria then
pounced on keeper Victor
Valdes' mistake to breathe
life into next Wednesday's
second leg.
The match was the first
time the two sides had
met since Pep Guardiola
ended his reign as
Barcelona manager and
was replaced by
assistant Tito Vilanova.
Jose Mourinho's Madrid
side looked to pounce on
the counter attack from
the off, and could have
gone ahead if former
Manchester United winger
Ronaldo had played a
firmer pass to Karim
Benzema on the edge of
the penalty box.
Reigning Fifa World Player
of the Year Messi - already
on the receiving end of a
strong challenge from the
visiting defender Fabio
Coentrao - then blazed
over from 20 yards before
Pedro tested Iker Casillas.
The first half continued in
the standard tempo of a
'Clasico' as Spanish Cup
holders Barcelona
dominated the ball with
their relentless 'Tiki-taka'
passing, and La Liga
champions Real
threatened with their
incisive speed and power
on the break.

Chelsea set to sign Moses as Wigan accept bid

Chelsea are set to sign
Nigeria forward Victor
Moses from Wigan
after the European
champions finally met
the Latics’ asking price.
The Blues had seen
four bids for Moses
rejected by Wigan
chairman Dave Whelan
during the course of a
fractious transfer saga
that had lasted since
the end of last season.
Whelan
had
infuriated Chelsea by
speaking publicly
about the negotiations
in a bid to drive up the
price.
But Chelsea boss
Roberto Di Matteo is on
the verge of getting his
man at the fifth
attempt after Wigan
confirmed they have
accepted an improved
offer and have given
the 21-year-old
permission to discuss a
contract with the west
London club.
“The club can confirm
that after four
unsuccessful bids from
Chelsea for Victor
Moses, a fifth bid has
today finally met the
valuation and terms
set by Wigan Athletic
and been accepted. The
player has been given
permission to speak
with Chelsea,” a
statement on Wigan’s
website confirmed.
It has been reported
that Wigan were
demanding around £9
million for Moses, who
joined the Latics from
Crystal Palace in 2010
and has risen to
prominence after a
series of impressive
displays last season.

ESUT lecturers protest VC’s kidnap

MEMBERS of
Academic Staff Union of
Universities , ASUU,
Enugu State University
of Science and
Technology, ESUT
Branch, Thursday,
protested the non-
release of their Vice-
Chancellor, Professor
Cyprian Onyeji, nine
days after his
abduction by suspected
kidnappers.
The academic staff led
by their chairman, Dr.
Agu Gab Agu,
demanded the
immediate release of
the Vice Chancellor
who was abducted at
the gate of the ESUT
permanent site at
Agbani Wednesday last
week.
After spending nine
days in captivity,
nothing meaningful
has been heard from
his abductors except
the rumour that their
earlier demand for
N200 million ransom
had been reduced to
N50 million.
The lecturers who
marched round the
former temporary site
of the university at
Independence Layout,
Enugu, dressed in their
academic gowns
displayed placards with
various inscriptions.
Some of them read:
“Kidnapping is anti-
intellectualism”, “ESUT
is not safe for academic
exercise”, “Set free our
VC to continue his good
works”, “Please release
our VC for everybody’s
happiness” and “All we
are saying give us
protection in our work
place”.
The protest was
preceded by a prayer
session conducted by
Professor John
Obasikene, the Dean
Students Affairs.
Addressing the
lecturers, the ASUU
Chairman, said: “As
colleagues of Prof.
Cyprian Onyeji, we
attest that he is a good
natured man who will
not wish the abduction
of an enemy.
”We join well-meaning
persons to pray and
demand that his
abductors bring him
back safely to rejoin his
family, friends and
colleagues, now.”
Agu urged the lecturers
not to relent in their
prayers for the release
of the Vice-Chancellor
whom he described as
a financial member of
ASUU.
He enjoined the
aggrieved lecturers to
get involved in the
search for the VC,
advising them to send
any information they
may have about the
VC’s abductors to the
appropriate security
agencies.
Meanwhile, non –
academic staff and
students of the
university have
continued to hold
special prayer sessions
for the release of the
Vice Chancellor while
appealing to his
abductors to set him
free without further
delay.

Police rescue robbery suspect from mob attack

Men of
Bayelsa Police special
security outfit
Operation Doo Akpo,
yesterday, saved a
robbery suspect from
being lynched by an
angry mob on Mgbi
Road in Amarata
suburb of Yenagoa.
The suspect, in
company of another
now at large, was said
to have robbed a
woman coming out
from one of the new
generation banks at
Amarata of her cash at
gunpoint and fled in a
get away motorcycle.
The hoodlums, it was
learnt, were given a
hot chase by other
angry Okada riders.
Luck, however, ran out
on the two men when
the angry Okada riders
blocked them in front
of the Melford Okilo
General Hospital.
While one of the
suspects was
apprehended and
given the beating of
his life, the other
jumped over the
hospital fence and
escaped into the bush.
The prompt
intervention of a police
patrol team that was
on surveillance in the
area, prevented the
angry mob from
setting the suspect
ablaze.
But the motorcycle
with which the robbery
suspects operated was
not spared as it was
torched.
Said a policeman
attached to one of the
patrol teams: “When
we rushed to the
scene, we discovered
that they had beaten
the suspect to stupor
and were about
pouring petrol on him.”

EPL: Chelsea Fight Back to Beat Reading

Chelsea avoided a major
upset as they came from
behind to overcome a
brave Reading at Stamford
Bridge, reports the BBC.
A Frank Lampard penalty
had put Chelsea ahead
before Pavel Pogrebnyak's
steered header levelled
matters.
Chelsea keeper Petr Cech
fumbled a Danny Guthrie
free-kick into his own net
to gift Reading a shock
lead.
Gary Cahill's shot hauled
Chelsea level and, after
Fernando Torres tapped in
when he appeared offside,
Branislav Ivanovic got a
fourth for the Blues.

Ideye, Osaze get Eagles recall

Strikers Osaze Odemwingie
and Brown Ideye will be
recalled by Nigeria as they
gun for a win in next
month’s AFCON qualifier in
Liberia.
MTNFootball.com has again
scooped that Osaze and
Ideye, who were both not
considered for Nigeria
qualifiers in June, will on
Thursday be named among
the Europe-based stars for
the 2013 Nations Cup clash
on September 8 in Monrovia.
A top team official said:
“Keshi wants more fire
power and so the recall of
both Osaze and Brown
(Ideye).”
Osaze got off to a flying start
with a penalty goal for his
English club West Bromwich
Albion against Liverpool at
the weekend, while Ideye
has been in fine form in
front of goal for his
Ukrainian club Dynamo Kiev
both in the UEFA Champions
League and the league.
Other foreign-based pros for
the Liberia clash are Mikel
Obi, Elderson Echiejile,
Vincent Enyeama, Victor
Moses, Ahmed Musa, Austin
Ejide, Ike Uche, Obiora
Nwankwo, Efe Ambrose and
skipper Joseph Yobo.
MTNFootball.com has already
revealed that Chelsea
midfielder Mikel is staging a
return to the national team
even though coach Stephen
Keshi still has reservations
about how the player will
cope on the artificial pitch in
Liberia.
Yobo, who was sidelined by
injury for the team’s June
qualifiers, will return to lead
the team to battle after he
has sorted out his club
future by joining Turkish
giants Fenerbahce on a
permanent deal from EPL
side Everton.
“With his transfer issues
sorted out now, Joseph Yobo
is expected to return. And
being that the team is
playing away, the thinking of
the coach is to bring in
players that would add bite
to the team up front,” stated
a top Nigeria Football
Federation (NFF) official.
The foreign pros will in the
week leading to the match
join up with players from the
Nigeria Premier League, who
resumed training on Monday
in Abuja.
