Gunmen snatch N2m from Anambra ministry staff

THREE persons
suspected to be armed
robbers Thursday
snatched N2 million
from a staff of the
Anambra State Ministry
of Lands as he was
about to enter the
ministry’s gate.
It was not clear what
the money was meant
for, but Vanguard
gathered that the
suspected robbers
trailed the staff from
the bank where he
collected the money
until he was about to
enter the ministry’s
gate, when the three
people on a motorcycle
brought out guns and
forced him to hand
over the bag. They
collected the
cellophane bag which
contained the money
and fled.
Even those loitering
around the ever- busy
ministry did not know
what happened until
the staff raised an
alarm after the people
had sped off on their
motorcycle.
According to a source, a
director in the ministry
(names withheld) had
sent the staff to collect
the money and
questions were still
being raised about the
purpose of
withdrawing the cash
when it was not the
pay day in the ministry.
Commissioner for
Lands, Mr. Okoli Akirika
could not be reached
yesterday as he was
said to be attending an
official function when
Vanguard visited the
ministry.
However, unlike the
usual practice in the
ministry, the gate was
securely locked even as
security men asked
visitors to identify
themselves and name
the person they
wanted to see before
being allowed in.
Some staff of the
ministry who were
approached by
Vanguard declined to
comment on the issue,
saying that only the
said director who
asked that the money
be withdrawn, could
explain the reasons for
his action.
